Leap into the World of AWS Certifications
My strategy to pass the AWS certification exams.
Published Dec 14, 2024
Cloud computing skills, particularly in platforms like AWS, differ significantly from traditional IT skills, although there are some areas of overlap. For me, developing these new technical skills presented a challenge, primarily because I lacked the opportunity to engage in hands-on technical work within my role. However, pursuing certifications proved to be a game-changer, helping me build both competence and confidence with new technologies.
I firmly believe that certifications offer a win-win scenario for everyone involved—candidates, organizations, and vendors alike. Preparing for a certification forces you to focus on the core features of a specific product and learn how to implement them according to best practices. A well-designed solution architecture can improve customer experiences, reduce costly mistakes, minimize rework, and prevent failures. Certifications also introduce you to a broad spectrum of features, some of which may not seem immediately relevant but could become crucial down the line. In my LinkedIn article, My Reluctant AWS Cloud Certification Journey, I outlined the motivations that drove me to pursue AWS certifications.
Overview of AWS Certifications
AWS currently offers 12 different certifications, which are organized into clear, recommended learning paths to help you prioritize based on your individual goals. Although this can feel overwhelming for someone just starting their journey, taking the first step is often the hardest. Once you begin, you may find it difficult to stop as you become immersed in the discipline and knowledge. I hope this article provides clarity and guidance on how to proceed.
AWS certifications are divided into four primary categories:
- Foundational (Cloud Practitioner, AI Practitioner)
- Professional (Solution Architect, DevOps Engineer)
Each certification deepens your expertise in a specific area. It’s not mandatory to pursue them in a particular order, and you are free to choose certifications that align with your immediate interests or career needs. You don't need to complete all certifications; the process is highly flexible. Additionally, AWS certifications help prepare you for emerging technology trends, such as Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Some employers provide access to training resources like Udemy Business and AWS Skill Builder Partner Network, so it’s worth checking if these are available to you. Online training platforms are relatively affordable, and you can often find discounts, coupons, or exam vouchers to further reduce costs. For each certification exam you pass, AWS typically offers a 50% discount on your next exam.
My Approach to Preparing for AWS Certifications
There is no shortage of resources available to help you prepare for AWS certifications, and many professionals share their strategies on platforms like LinkedIn. Below are the resources and techniques I personally used to guide my preparation:
- Simulation tests (Tutorials Dojo, Udemy)
- Exam prep courses and official practice exams on Skill Builder (AWS Skill Builder)
To maintain focus and avoid monotony, I opted for a social learning environment, often studying in coffee shops like Barnes & Noble or Starbucks. I committed about 8 hours per week, primarily on weekends. Here are some key techniques that helped me succeed:
- Diversify instructors: Taking courses from multiple instructors reinforced my learning and helped fill knowledge gaps. Repetition is key to mastering new concepts.
- Use simulation tests repeatedly**:** Practice tests are essential for honing exam skills. Tutorials Dojo was my primary resource for practice tests, though I also found Udemy to be useful.
- Focus on understanding questions**:** Carefully analyze each question and understand why certain answers are incorrect. This is critical because multiple answers may appear correct, and you must choose the best one for the given scenario.
- Leverage AWS Skill Builder’s resources**:** The exam prep courses, and practice exams provided by AWS Skill Builder contain high-quality questions and links to additional resources to help you prepare for the actual exam.
Some of my preferred online learning platforms and instructors include:
I’m thankful to the above instructors for creating quality learning contents that helped me pass the certifications.
Expectation vs. Reality
Just as in fitness, there are no shortcuts to achieving your certification goals. However, it is possible to optimize your time and effort by following strategies that have worked for others. Reaching your certification goals requires Patience, Persistence, and Perseverance (the 3Ps). It's important to pace yourself and avoid rushing through the process, as this will keep you motivated throughout the journey.
While certification will undoubtedly improve your skills and confidence, don't expect immediate job offers, promotions, or pay raises just because you’ve earned a certification. Instead, view it as a long-term investment in your personal and professional growth. In the end, the real benefits become apparent when you notice improvements in your productivity and the quality of your work. The hard work and enhanced skills will pay off in more subtle yet meaningful ways, such as a stronger reputation as an achiever within your organization or industry.
