
Understanding AWS EC2 Placement Groups for Newbies
In AWS, a placement group is a way to group EC2 instances together within an Availability Zone to influence how they are placed on the underlying hardware.

When working with EC2 instances in AWS, there comes a time when you want more control over how and where your instances are placed in the AWS data centers. That’s where Placement Groups come in.
In this blog, we’ll walk through what placement groups are, the three types available, and when to use each — using easy language, real-life examples, and clear comparisons.
Imagine you're organizing a set of computers (EC2 instances) and want to decide how they are physically arranged in a data center. You don’t get direct control of the hardware, but with Placement Groups, you can tell AWS your placement strategy.
In AWS, a placement group is a way to organize and control how your EC2 instances are placed within the AWS infrastructure.
There are three strategies available:
- Cluster – Pack instances close together for performance
- Spread – Spread instances far apart for safety
- Partition – Organize large sets of instances into failure-isolated groups
Each one serves a different purpose — whether it’s for performance, high availability, or fault isolation.
All instances are launched close together — on the same rack or nearby — within a single Availability Zone (AZ).
You get very fast networking between instances — ideal for High-Performance Computing (HPC) or workloads that require low latency.
If that Availability Zone goes down, all your instances may go down together. So it’s high performance, high risk.

You place all your team members in the same office so they can work fast. But if something happens to the building, everyone's affected.
Instances are placed on separate hardware to reduce risk. If one fails, the others should still run fine. Here Each EC2 instance is placed on completely separate hardware — even within the same AZ.
- You can spread across multiple AZs
- Max 7 instances per AZ per group
- You can create multiple Spread Groups if you need more than 7 per AZ
Let’s say you have:
- Spread Group A in
us-east-1a
: 7 instances ✅ - Spread Group B in
us-east-1a
: another 7 instances ✅
That’s a total of 14 instances in the same AZ, spread across two different groups.
➡️ Each group’s 7 instances are placed on separate hardware, independent of other groups.
To minimize the risk of multiple instance failures due to hardware issues.

- Systems that can't afford multiple instance failures at once
You place your team in different buildings. If one building has a problem, only one person is affected.
Distributes instances across partitions. Each partition uses different racks with their own power and network. Here Instances are grouped into partitions. Each partition is on separate racks, but instances within a partition can share hardware.

- Hundreds of EC2 instances supported
- AWS lets you see which instance belongs to which partition
- Partitions can span multiple AZs
Instances may share hardware, but each partition is isolated from others.
You can have hundreds of instances. Each partition is isolated, so a failure in one shouldn't affect the others.
AWS lets you see which partition each instance is in, using the EC2 metadata service — helpful for managing and debugging.

You assign teams to different buildings. Each team shares a space, but buildings are isolated. If one building has issues, other teams continue unaffected.
