When he was four years old, my son had a speech delay -- nothing major, but enough that my wife and I began to work more intently to help his development. We did speech therapy, we read books, we practiced asking and answering questions. We were working hard!
Soon afterward, I started writing about AI, smart speakers, and voice assistants for work. And my son became fascinated with these things. But whenever he told them to play his favorite Disney song, they couldn't understand him. This put him on a mission.
We hadn't seen huge gains with our efforts, but with smart speakers in the house, our son began to improve his articulation specifically to get Alexa to play the music he wanted. A few months later, he was all caught up.
I never would've guessed that smart speakers would help my kiddo overcome his speech delay. But sometimes the technology we use surprises us!
