Justin shared his journey through Y Combinator (YC), emphasizing the importance of building quickly and receiving direct feedback from customers. "Andy Jassy just came out to talk to the YC Summer 24 batch on Tuesday night and he said a lot of his ideas got punched in the face by customers," noted Andrew. This iterative approach, where ideas are continuously refined based on customer input, is a cornerstone of the YC philosophy.

Building a startup is undoubtedly challenging. Justin highlighted the crucial role of co-founders and a supportive team in maintaining momentum through tough times. "Co-founders are arguably the most important part of building a company," Justin emphasized. He also discussed the importance of maintaining mental and physical health, noting that good sleep and self-care can significantly impact a founder's resilience. "I can't tell you how many conversations I had with co-founders where I felt like the world was closing in on us... and then we got a good night's sleep."

One of the standout pieces of advice from YC is to do things that don't scale in the early stages. This approach allows startups to gather valuable feedback and validate their ideas without getting bogged down by scalability concerns. Justin recounted Porter's journey, sharing how they initially targeted small-scale users, including college students and hackathon participants, to refine their product. "We were hunting down college kids, people at hackathons... that was super non-scalable, but it took us really far."
