Unleashing the Magic: Building Strife for the AWS Game Builder Challenge 🎮✨
Strife is a 2D action-thriller where a young boy, orphaned by a sorcerer's destruction of his village, embarks on a quest for revenge. With fluid combat and a gripping story, prayers face dark enemies and inner conflict. Built with Unity and AWS services.
The idea for Strife stemmed from a love of storytelling and action-adventure games that combine meaningful narratives with thrilling gameplay. The central theme—a young boy’s quest to overcome personal loss and the darkness within—resonates with the universal struggle of resilience and redemption. The AWS Game Builder Challenge provided the perfect opportunity to bring this story to life through technology.
Strife is a 2D action-thriller game that immerses players in the journey of an orphaned boy fighting to avenge his village destroyed by a powerful sorcerer. Players wield a magical scythe for melee combat, a ranged fireball attack, and a tactical dash to navigate dynamic levels filled with enemies. The ultimate goal is to defeat the sorcerer and decide whether to let revenge or forgiveness guide the protagonist’s destiny.
Using the Unity engine, Strife was developed with smooth gameplay and visually captivating animations. All assets, from character designs to backgrounds, were hand-crafted to bring the world to life. Integrating AWS services like Amazon Q Developer for testing and collaboration allowed for seamless iteration, while AWS S3 was used for storing large game assets. Amazon CloudWatch enabled us to monitor performance metrics and optimize gameplay responsiveness, ensuring a polished experience for players.
Developing a complete game within the constraints of the hackathon was no easy feat.
Asset Creation: Designing characters and animations from scratch required creativity and quick execution.
Balancing Gameplay: Ensuring combat mechanics felt rewarding and the boss fight was challenging yet fair was a meticulous process.
